"Forsyth Writes Together" to Celebrate, Support Authors

If you love writing and reading, the March 22 event at Forsyth County Public Library promises to be an informative and fun-filled day.

Patch Staff Report

In recent months, the Forsyth County Public Library has offered various writing workshops for patrons in an effort to support the endeavors of local authors. In doing so, the library has been made aware of quite a number of local authors in the Forsyth and greater Atlanta areas.

The library’s annual Forsyth Reads Together program aims to get everyone in the county reading and talking about the same book. The 2013 book selection was All Over but the Shoutin’ by Rick Bragg and the library hosted a visit with Mr. Bragg last September. The 2014 book selection is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

The library is pleased to offer the community a counterpart to Forsyth Reads Together, which will encourage and support budding authors. This March, the library will launch “Forsyth Writes Together” with a day celebrating local authors.

The event will be held on Saturday, March 22 at the Post Road Library. The library has invited a variety of speakers to present throughout the day, including local author and instructor, David Darracott, local book publisher, BookLogix, and local author Chris Negron. Patrons may register now at the library’s website to attend these presentations, which are limited to 30 patrons each.

Mr. Darracott did an outstanding job presenting his seminar, “Write Your Novel Now” on January 11 at the Post Road Library, and there was a lengthy waitlist of patrons who wished to attend. He will repeat the presentation on March 22 at 10:30 a.m. so more patrons may participate in this popular seminar, which focuses on the process of planning, launching, and completing a novel.

BookLogix will present a workshop called “Book Marketing Basics” at 2:00 p.m. This presentation will focus on marketing, one of the most important steps in the publishing process. Participants will learn about the methods an author can use to promote his books, the cost of marketing, and more.

Additionally, patron and local author Chris Negron has graciously offered to present a workshop based on his experiences of pursing a literary agent in the traditional publishing world. He will share the necessary steps involved to obtain an agent, how to pitch a book, and more. “Traditional Publishing 101” will begin at 3:30 p.m.

The library will also provide an arena for local authors to meet with patrons and discuss their work in an open house format. The “Local Authors Open House” will feature local authors from 12:30-2 p.m., where they will interact with patrons and other local authors, while having the opportunity to display and discuss their work. The authors will be stationed around different areas of the library, depending on the target audience and genre of their books.

The library looks forward to an informative and fun-filled day on Saturday, March 22, where local authors will be celebrated and supported.
