Couple Fights Cancer with Italian Food

There may be a cancer developing in your body and you won't know about it for 10 years. A south Forsyth couple, Maria and Antonio Fundora, are doing all they can to tell you about Pancreatic Cancer.

We all know about cancer, some of us better than others, having lost friends or loved ones. For the most part, I'm referring to the "biggies: breast, lung, kidney, bladder, colon, prostate, among others.

But, Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg can tell you about another form; so can some 33,000 other Americans. They are dying from Prostate Cancer.

It happens that a couple in south Forsyth has made it an avocation to tell the public -- local people, at least -- about this silent, killer. Before telling you about them, here's a little more about Pancreatic Cancer, the fourth deadliest of all cancers. It takes at least a decade after a mutation occurs in a normal cell in the pancreas to develop a full-fledged cancer cell. The "outside" life expectancy once it blossoms is five years; most will be dead in three to six months.

Maria and Antonio Fundora, owners of  have been promoting Pancreatic Cancer research for nearly four years. Marie's mother died just three months of being diagnosed. They do it by serving the public good Italian food, crafted by Antonio. Maria hosts, but spends much of her time arranging special events at the Casa to raise awareness and money for cancer research.

The flagship event is the Purple Pansies Gala, an evening of food, wine, spirits, auctions and raffles. The event this year will be Sunday, Sept. 30. The money raised goes to the JCM Foundation at the Johns Hopkins Institute, where significant research takes place under the direction of Dr. Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue, M.D., Ph.D., at the Hopkins' Sol Goldman Pancreatic Research Center.
