Are There Sex Offenders On Your Trick or Treat Route?

We checked and found more than 60 registered sex offenders in Cumming, Ga. Is there one in your neighborhood?

Halloween is Wednesday and kids will be ringing bells throughout the neighborhood asking for candy. But could one of those bells be to the home of a sex offender?

Cumming Patch checked with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office website and we found 62 registered sex offenders with a Cumming address in Forsyth County. In addition, three have Dawsonville addresses, three have Alpharetta addresses, three have Suwanee addresses and 16 have Gainesville addresses.

While 17 of them are listed as being incarcerated, many still live in neighborhoods where children will be trick-or-treating.

Sex offenders have the lowest recidivism rate of all criminals except murderers, according to dozens of university, federal and state studies. Not all sex offenders have victimized children, and over 1/3 of sex crimes perpetrated against children are committed by other children. 95% of kids are abused by family or friends who aren't on the registry. Dr. Jill Levenson’s 2009 study, “How Safe are Trick-or-Treaters: Child Sex Crime Rates on Halloween?” found that non-familial child sexual abuse accounted for less than .2% on Halloween. Why is law enforcement spreading such glaring myths, and why is the media latching on??

I never allow my kids to do Trick or Treating outside our property. I had set them some limitations and had warned them that in our place sex offenders are very rampant. My husband and I had them registered to SafeKidZone. It's an application on their phone where they will be able to alert their loved ones when they are in trouble. The call can be escalated to the nearest 911, if needed. On this app too, they will be able to view threat level and sex offenders in an area. I am very thankful I have this kind of protection for my kids. If you would like to know more about the service, you can check out their site http://Safekidzone.com
