Boater Sentenced in Death of Usher's Stepson Following Lake Lanier Accident

The Atlanta man convicted of killing 11-year-old Kile Glover in a boating accident on Lake Lanier will serve four years in prison.

Jeffrey Hubbard of Atlanta was found guilty of homicide by vessel and serious injury by vessel Feb. 20 in Gainesville. Hubbard was driving a Jet Ski on July 6, 2012, that collided with a pontoon boat towing a raft, which had children on board, reports the Gainesville Times.

Hubbard faced a mandatory minimum prison sentence of three years and a maximum sentence of 23 years, the Times said.

Hubbard’s craft allegedly ran over 11-year-old Kile Glover of Atlanta near Holiday Marina in Buford, says the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Kile, the son of singer and TV host Usher’s ex-wife Tameka Foster and Ryan Glover — president of Bounce TV— was tubing with a 15-year-old girl when they were struck. The boy was in a coma for almost two weeks before he died.

Jordan Shepp, then 15, of Alpharetta was injured in the collision. Ryan Glover was driving the pontoon boat that towed the tube at the time of the collision.

Defense witness Phil Odom testified that Hubbard was neither reckless or at fault in the collision. Odom said Ryan Glover’s pontoon boat “should have taken action to avoid the collision,” the newspaper reports. “More than likely, if the pontoon had stopped ... it wouldn’t have been in a collision,” Odom said.

State investigators said they did not believe Hubbard was intoxicated at the time of the incident, the Journal-Constitution reports.
