Car Burglars Punch, Pry Door Locks in Cumming

Four vehicles in the city of Cumming have been broken into in the past week, while burglars attempted to enter a fifth auto.

Four vehicles have been burglarized in the last week in the city of Cumming. Two were locked, according to the drivers, and the locks on the other two apparently were punched out. An attempt to pry out the lock and open the door also was made on a fifth vehicle.

The occupants of a white SUV are suspected in at least two of the cases.

A small, white SUV was parked beside a Cumming man's Ford F-150 about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Walmart on Market Place Boulevard.

The owner said he locked a gas tank in the bed of his truck and locked his truck with a key fob on the way into the store. He returned to find his truck unlocked and a generator and bag of hunting equipment missing from the backseat, according to the Cumming Police Department report. The items stolen are collectively valued at more than $2,000.

The same day about 2:50 p.m., a local woman reported her GMC Yukon had been burglarized at Walmart between 2 and 2:45 p.m. She told police she was sure she locked her doors, yet a Coach diaper bag worth $300 was missing.

The woman told police when she was changing her child's diaper, before she locked her vehicle doors, she noticed an occupied, white SUV, possibly with red trim, parked behind her vehicle several rows over, according to the CPD report.

The driver's door lock on a third vehicle parked at Walmart was found punched out later the same day. The driver of the Chevy Tahoe told police she had parked earlier in the day and returned later in the evening to find the SUV burglarized and a camera gone.

Two cameras, one valued at $300 and another at $500, were taken from the vehicle, which sustained $600 in damage, according to the CPD report.

Three days later on Saturday, Nov. 16, a Cumming man parked his Chevy Silverado truck at 6:15 p.m. at Golden Buddha at 580 Atlanta Road and returned to find his vehicle damaged and a diaper bag missing.

"When (the victim) returned to the vehicle an hour later, he went to put his key in the door and noticed a hole in the driver's side door just below the lock," the CPD report says. "After noticing (the) damage, (he) searched his vehicle and noticed his diaper bag was missing. He advised the bag contained $72.53 worth of child's clothing he had just purchased earlier in the day."

The lock had been punched in, busting the door lock, causing $1,200 in damage, according to the report. The diaper bag was worth $20.
