Cumming Man Allegedly Steals Nearly $700 from Great-Grandmother, 85

He was charged with cruelty to the elderly, theft and fraud.

A Cumming man is accused of stealing money from his great-grandmother, an elderly woman of whom he was the sole caregiver, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Rainwater said.

Jonathan Wayne Cowart, 25, was jailed last week in connection with the alleged thefts, which were reported to police by a family member Aug. 21.

The victim, 85, told police Cowart took her debit card Aug. 19 and racked up nearly $700 in charges in three days in Cumming, Gainesville and Clermont, according to the police report. Rainwater said Cowart, who lived with his great-grandmother on Fairview Overlook, withdrew cash and made purchases, depriving the woman in his care of her money.

Cowart was on probation at the time. He has been charged with financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud and cruelty to the elderly.
