Cumming Man Dies After Falling from Tree Stand

A hunting trip turns tragic after a 44-year-old man falls to his death while hunting with his son in south Forsyth County on Monday.

A 44-year-old father dies and his son is injured after falling approximately 15 to 20 from a tree stand while hunting in a remote area in south Forsyth County on Monday evening.

Emergency crews responded to a wooded remote area along Old Atlanta Road around 5:18 p.m. following a call placed by the son, according to Division Chief Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department.

The father and son, who were hunting on private property, were not easy to find.

"We had to ping his cell phone to give us a symbol for coordinates to get close to where he was," said Shivers. "We were able to get into the property and walk in, and through yelling back and forth with the son, made contact with him."

Shivers said the father was unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing.

"CPR was initially started on him, but was discontinued quickly just due to his injuries and the remote location in which they were in," Shivers said.

Forsyth County Coroner Lauren McDonald told Cumming Patch that he pronounced Jeffery Lane McBryant dead at the scene.

The son, whose name has not been released, was taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth with non-life threatening injuries.

"He was stable and expected to recover just fine," said Shivers.

As to how McBryant and his son fell from the tree stand?

The coroner said the son told someone at the scene of the incident that the father spotted a deer and wanted to give his son the opportunity to shoot the animal. As they were in the process of switching stands, that were next to each other, one of the stands may have possibly collapsed.

"Now we don't know who was in which one as of that night, but it did seem that one of them collapsed down and that's when both of them fell out of that tree," McDonald said.
