Cumming Police Investigating Car Parts Thefts

The catalytic converters of Honda Elements are easy to steal, and contain valuable precious metals, authorities say.

The Cumming Police Department and security officials at a Cumming hospital are looking into a rash of car parts thefts that target a specific make and model, Forsyth County News reports.

Catalytic converters are being stolen out of Honda Elements parked at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, according to police. Three thefts of the part occurred on July 12 in the parking deck near the front of the hospital.

Thieves can sell the catalytic converters for scrap, as the interior of the device contains platinum, a precious metal that currently sells for almost $1,500 per troy ounce.  A replacement catalytic converter for a Honda Element can cost up to $400.

Honda Elements are particularly easy targets because of how high they sit off the ground, the Atlanta Police Department told Patch last May.
