Cumming Police Launches Weapon Safety Program

The Cumming Police Department is launching a new community outreach program on weapon safety and more.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about weapon safety?

Now is your opportunity--in December the launches a new community outreach program to educate residents about weapon safety and Georgia firearms law.

"We are hoping this will turn into a big turnout in the local community," said Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi, spokesman for Cumming P.D.

The Firearms Safety Seminar is geared specifically towards civilians and will cover topics that are frequently discussed with law enforcement officers, such as:

  • Recommended Home Defense Weapons
  • Firearm/Weapon Storage and Safety
  • Firearm/Weapon Laws in Georgia
  • Use of Pepper Spray by Civilians

The course will be led by three members of the police department, Officer Jonathan Clapp, NRA and Private Firearms Instructor, Det. John Coffman, P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certified Instructor and Firearms Instructor and Officer Burrell Sullivan, Expert Gunsmith and General Firearms Expert. Each one has varying areas of expertise in firearms and weapons training and Georgia Law.

The free, two hour seminar will be held at the Castleberry Community Building on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, and is open to anyone over the age of 21.

"Right now, attendance is limited to 100 people, but additional dates will be added if it becomes necessary," Zimbardi said.

For parents who wish to educate their children in regard to firearms safety, information packets will be available upon request.

"This program and ones like it have been big hits in other agencies, most notably Marietta Police Department," said Zimbardi.
