Dangerous Chase on Georgia 400 Leads to the Arrest of Two

June 23, a deputy trying to initiate a stop for no tag light encountered suspects ready to flee. The deputy called in the stop but changed the dispatched call to a chase. They were traveling Georgia 400 northbound with speeds in excess of 120 m.p.h. with the driver weaving from lane to lane.

The 1984 Chevrolet two door pick-up truck while attempting to take the Pilgrim Mill Road exit, crossed over several lanes in front of another vehicle to take the ramp. The truck seemed to be slowing down while approaching the red light but then sped away running the light and continuing onto Georgia 400.

While the deputy was reporting to dispatch, their speed was now in excess of 100 m.p.h., passengers in the truck began to throw objects out of the window along with large amounts of paperwork. Other units were now responding in the chase as the vehicle ran the light at Highway 369 and continued northbound. A north precinct deputy informed dispatch he was putting stop sticks out at Hampton Park just a short distance away.

The truck continued on Georgia 400 hitting the stop sticks and turned right onto Crossroads Road with a flat tire. The deputy still behind the vehicle reported that they were now driving on the rim and sparks were flying out from the vehicle. The suspects turned right onto Jot-Em-Down Road and eventually came to a stop but not before more objects were thrown out of the driver’s window.

A deputy ordered the passenger to step out of the vehicle while other deputies handcuffed the driver and the middle passenger. Deputies learned the driver, Jason Waters, 35, had a felony warrant from Dawson County and the middle passenger, Dawn Waters, 39, had a warrant in Lumpkin County while they were being arrested. The other passenger was released.

Lying in the grass beside the driver’s door was a small glass vial filled with a white powdery substance. A search of the vehicle yielded another glass vile with white powder in it along with a small bag of marijuana, a cigarette box with two marijuana roaches and rolling papers.

Both suspects stated that the white powder was bath powder and that Waters had ingested it earlier in the evening. The vials are being tested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Other deputies checked out the location where the objects were reportedly thrown from the car and located a handgun.

Charges issued are as follows; Traffic Violations, Littering, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving With License Suspended, DUI, Possession of Marijuana along with felony charges of Fleeing a Police Officer, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon and Wanted Person Located.
