Elderly Man Dies After Cumming Apartment Fire

The 78-year-old man suffered burns and smoke inhalation late Monday when a fire sparked in his Forsyth County home.

An elderly, wheelchair-bound man has died from injuries he suffered late Monday in an apartment fire in Cumming.

Allen Dean Boyd, 78, was rescued and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with burns and smoke inhalation following the blaze about 10:45 p.m. at 225 Nancy Lane in Cumming, according to Access North Georgia and CBS Atlanta

A family member spotted the fire, which firefighters contained to the man's apartment, with most of the damage in one room, and notified authorities, according to Forsyth County Fire Department spokesman Jason Shivers, Access North Georgia reports. The victim was unconscious when firefighters pulled him from the burning home.

A firefighter also suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth for treatment, CBS reports.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
