Fire Burns Storage Building, Two Injured in Gas Leak

Firefighters were busy Monday battling a storage building fire and a gas leak.

Firefighters were on the scene battling a "pretty significant" storage building fire late Monday afternoon, according to Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department.

The storage building, located on Atlanta Highway south of Old Atlanta Road in North Forsyth County, and its contents went up in smoke. But the house next door did not incur any damage nor were there any injuries.

Shivers told Cumming Patch he received a fair amount of phone calls during evening rush hour because the fire produced heavy black smoke due to the materials that were burning inside the building. "A lot of eyes saw the smoke and thought something much worse was occurring," he said.

Earlier on Monday firefighters responded to a gas main break due to an underground boring operation on Brookwood Road in South Forsyth County at about 11:16 a.m., said Shivers.

Two Atlanta Gas Light workers are "fine" but did suffer minor injuries after they hit a underground power line that caused a brief flash fire. They were digging a trench to make access to the gas line.

According to Shivers, they sustained minor first-degree burns to their hands and face. One worker was transported to Emory Johns Creek Hospital and the other worker was treated on scene.

Brookwood Road near McGinnis Ferry and Caney Roads was shut down throughout the day and evening, but did finally reopen around 9 p.m. The active gas leak was brought under control about 6 p.m.
