Firey Crash Shuts Down Highway 9 Thursday Morning, No Serious Injuries

The collision between a tractor trailer and pick-up truck ignited a fire and snarled morning drive traffic.

Early Thursday a fiery accident between a tractor-trailer and pick-up truck shut down Highway 9 for most of the morning.

According to Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department, the incident occurred sometime in the three o'clock hour on Highway 9 near Gateway Drive, north of McFarland Road in South Forsyth County.

"During the collision one of the saddle fuel tanks of the tractor-trailer ruptured," said Shivers. "Following the rupture of the fuel a fire did result."

Shivers said the still from the fuel tanks contained about 150 gallons of diesel fuel. The fire that ignited caused significant damage to both vehicles and on the asphalt of Highway 9.

The driver's of each vehicle, both men, were not burned, but did suffer minor injuries from the impact of the wreck. They were both transported to area hospitals for treatment and evaluation. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

Forsyth County Hazardous Materials Unit, The Georgia Environmental Protection Division, the Georgia Department of Transportation and law enforcement responded and aided in Thursday's crash.

"A private hazardous materials mitigation company was also summoned to the scene and they worked throughout the operation to safely remove the spilled fuel from the roadway," added Shivers.

Highway 9 remained closed during morning drive traffic and reopened just before noon.
