Major Gas Leak In North Forsyth

Atlanta Gas Light and county authorities have the situation under control.

Forsyth County authorities said there was a "major gas leak" at the intersection of Carnes Drive and Settingdown Circle in North Forsyth at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Capt. Tim House with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office told Cumming Patch fire department personnel responded and sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene of the gas leak to redirect traffic until the situation was contained.

"At approximately 2:30 p.m. Atlanta Gas Light showed up--they found the source of the leak, turned off the gas," said Capt. House. "At about 3 o'clock we opened the roadway back up and left everything with Atlanta Gas Light."

Capt. Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department said the gas leak was caused by a mechanical failure of a gas main in a natural gas control vault.

"There was a failure of a line that had been--it was under pressure and for whatever reason it ruptured," Shivers said. "It was not due to any kind of human intervention and there was nobody working with equipment around it."
