Man Drowns at Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier

The 20-year-old and two friends were attempting to swim from the beach area at Sunset Cove to nearby boat slips approximately 100 yards away.

A man who apparently drowned at Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier Tuesday (Sept. 17) afternoon was from College Park, according to Melissa Cummings of the GA Department of Natural Resources.

He was identified as Shaquille Marquise Connor-Blunt, 20.

Cummings said that Blunt and two friends were attempting to swim from the beach area at Sunset Cove to nearby boat slips approximately 100 yards away.

"About half way, the victim stated he couldn’t make it and they tried to turn around," said Cummings. "As the victim struggled the two friends tried to help but were almost overcome themselves."

Hall County Fire Services divers recovered him in 17 feet of water around 4:35 pm. Fire Chief David Kimbrell estimated that Blunt had been in the water for about 40 minutes when divers found him. They immediately began resuscitation, but efforts failed and he was pronounced dead, Kimbrell said.

Blunt was transported to Northeast Ga. Medical Center.

No foul play is suspected.

Sunset Cove is a sandy beach area on Lake Lanier Islands Resort.
