UPDATE: Motorcycle Rear-Ends Patrol Vehicle

David Emory Castleberry, the 30-year-old man from Cumming who slammed his motorcycle into the back of a Forsyth County Sheriff's patrol vehicle, was brought to the Forsyth County Detention Center Thursday around 11 p.m.

Karleen Chalker of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said in an e-mail that he did not sustain any major injuries in the collision, but remains in the county jail.

"No further charges have been lodged at this time," she said.

A motorcyclist was sent to the hospital Wednesday night after slamming into the back of a Forsyth County Sheriff's patrol vehicle, authorities said.

David Emory Castleberry, 30, of Cumming, suffered a facial broken bone along with cuts and bruises, according to Lt. Col Richard J. Doyle, director of Operations for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Doyle said the incident began around 11:40 p.m. near Canton Highway and Bethleview Road after DFC Matthew Foster spotted a motorcycle matching last week's BOLO (be on the lookout) alert of a stolen motorcycle.

"When the motorcyclist [Castleberry] spotted the deputy, he accelerated away at a high rate of speed prior to the deputy activating his lights," said Lt. Doyle.

"Deputy Foster pursued the motorcycle [while] several units ahead of the pursuit were able to position two vehicles stationary and staggered in the roadway on Highway 9 and Spot Road."

At that point Castleberry had "ample" room to drive his motorcycle around the patrol vehicles, but instead he rammed into the back of a patrol vehicle driven by DFC Bobby Francis, according to Lt. Doyle.

Neither deputy involved in the pursuit and crash was injured in the incident.

As for Castleberry, he has been charged with attempting to elude for a felony offense, theft by receiving a stolen vehicle, probation violation, DUI drugs, reckless driving, driving while license suspended or revoked, obscured or missing license plate, and failure to obey signs or control devices.

Lt. Doyle said Castleberry, who is also wanted on other felony charges, was expected to be released from North Fulton Hospital today [Thursday] and taken to jail.

No other information is available, but an investigation is underway.
