News Nearby: Inmate Escapes, Still at Large

The 46-year-old fugitive escaped during transfer from the Hall County Courthouse to a transport vehicle.

Authorities in Hall County are searching for an inmate who escaped custody on Tuesday around 12:40 p.m.

James Edward Cantrell, 46, who was among a group of inmates, was being escorted from the courthouse back to the Hall County Jail after court proceedings. He was in court for violation of a temporary protective order, with an original charge of felony battery.

He was able to escape by concealing himself in the alcove of a locked doorway on the exterior of the building. He found a nearby work truck that had the keys in the ignition and left the area, authorities said.

The alleged stolen vehicle is a red 1998 Ford pick-up with Georgia license tag number PMT 1963. The truck is equipped with a chrome, bed-mounted tool box and has a large Harley Davidson decal in the rear window.

Cantrell is described as being 6 feet tall and weighing 205 pounds. He was last seen wearing an orange jumpsuit, and was handcuffed in front of his body. He has multiple tattoos on his right forearm below the elbow.

If you have any information to the whereabouts of James Edward Cantrell, call 911 or 770-536-8812 immediately. Do not approach or attempt to make contact with him. Cantrell has a history of violent crimes and should be considered dangerous.

The incident remains under investigation.
