A logging truck overturned Wednesday afternoon on a busy state highway, bringing traffic on Georgia 400 in southern Forsyth County to a standstill.

A blown tire caused the driver to lose control of the truck, which in turn caused the truck to hit the concrete median wall, according to Deputy Sheriff Doug Rainwater of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

The truck carrying "full, tree-sized" logs overturned along the northbound side of GA 400 just a half-mile south of McFarland Parkway, said Division Chief Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department.

Shivers said after the truck overturned, it came to rest along the barrier wall next to the far left lane on the limited access highway.

"No other vehicle was involved and fortunately there were no injuries," he added.

Not only did the truck lose its load, but the single-vehicle accident also resulted in the truck spilling its diesel, motor oil and other fluids all over the highway, Shivers noted.

Shivers said all lanes have been reopened and traffic has returned to a normal pace. However, a private company will have to clean up the hazardous waste materials from the state highway.

"They are working as diligently and quickly as they can," he said, adding the stretch of road will have either a Georgia Department of Transportation or law enforcement presence while cleanup is underway.
