Report: Father, Son Drown at Lake Lanier in Forsyth

Witnesses said the teen went into the water to retrieve a ball and after he struggled, the father went in after him and neither resurfaced.

Update:

A few hours after rescue crews were called in response to the father-son drowning, a third person reportedly drowned at Lake Lanier on Sunday.

An unidentified man drowned while trying to walk across a sandbar to a nearby island near Old Federal Park, which is located on the east side of the lake, south of Browns Bridge.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, a 51-year-old man and his 15-year-old son drowned Sunday afternoon at Lake Lanier.

WSB TV reported the incident happened in Forsyth County and that rescue crews were in the area near 3 Sisters Island, which is near the middle of the lake, between mainland destinations Two Mile Creek Park in Forsyth and Aqualand Marina in South Hall County.

Witnesses said the teen went into the water to retrieve a ball and after he struggled, the father went in after him and neither resurfaced. They were pulled from the water between 2:34 p.m. and 2:43 p.m., about 30 minutes after they went under.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the father and son, whose names have not been released, were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where they were pronounced deceased.
