The FREE seminar, set for next week, aims to teach methods to avoid dangerous situations and prevent criminal activity.

Cumming Police Department is set to present Wednesday the National Rifle Association's FREE Refuse To Be A Victim Seminar and has about 20 seats still open, according to Officer Jonathan Clapp.

The class, set for Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m., aims to teach methods to avoid dangerous situations and prevent criminal activity, according to the NRA Instructor's website. Experts agree the most important factor in surviving a criminal attack is to have an overall safety strategy before you need it.

Seminar topics will address personal safety issues as well as home, automobile, telephone, technological and travel security. Participants will be presented with a variety of common sense crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices they may integrate into their daily lives.

Register via the NRA Instructors website by clicking here.

The seminar will be held at the Cumming Police Department in the Castleberry Community Building at 301 Veterans Memorial Blvd in Cumming.

Here's more about it from the NRA:

The seminar includes classroom instruction on a variety of crime prevention strategies, from criminal psychology to automobile crimes to cyber crime. Seminars can vary in length, and may be modified to suit the needs of a particular audience. This is not a firearms instruction course, and does not include instruction in physical combat self-defense. Seminars teach about common weaknesses that criminals may take advantage of, and teaches a variety of corrective measures that are practical, inexpensive, and easy to follow. Strategies include home security, carjack avoidance techniques, cyber safety, and use of personal safety devices. A complete seminar may last as long as eight hours and include the entire lesson plan, but a modified seminar may be as short as 90 minutes and address a specific topic. Students will receive the Refuse To Be A Victim student handbook, NRA Refuse To Be A Victim brochure, NRA Become A Refuse To Be A Victim Instructor Brochure, Refuse To Be A Victim Firearms Supplement, and a course completion certificate.
