Woman Escapes Atlanta Highway Fire in Cumming

The blaze closed portions of Highway 9 for about an hour and a half.

A woman escaped a house fire that closed a highway in Cumming on Wednesday for an hour and a half.

Forsyth County Fire Department spokesman Division Chief Jason Shivers said no one was injured in the blaze at a single-family home in the 4000 block of Atlanta Highway.

"There was someone home at the time, but she was able to get herself out prior to our arrival," he said. "The home did suffer some structural damage, but it should be to some degree salvageable."

The fire appears to be accidental, Shivers said, but is under investigation for cause and origin.

"It was brought under control very quickly upon our arrival by the first company that arrived on scene," Shivers added.

A portion of Highway 9 was closed for about an hour and a half due to the 11 a.m. blaze at 4615 Atlanta Highway between Fowler and Post roads, according to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy First Class Doug Rainwater and the department's website. Deputies alternated traffic in one lane for about a half hour, Rainwater said.
