Celebration of Newly-Created University of North Georgia Held at Cumming Campus

The event held on Thursday, Jan. 10, was proclaimed University of North Georgia Day in Forsyth County.

A rolling tour of four campuses, including Cumming, was held recently to celebrate the creation of the University of North Georgia.

UNG makes up the union between North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College, which was approved by the Board of Regents on Jan. 8. The merger of the two schools and with nearly 16,000 students makes UNG the seventh-largest public university in Georgia.

During the UNG Rolling Tour on Jan. 10, President Bonita Jacobs and staff members visited campuses in Cumming, Dahlonega, Gainesville, and Oconee.

While in Cumming, a celebration was held at the University Center | GA 400 campus, which is located off Pilgrim Mill Road. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners also proclaimed the day University of North Georgia Day in Forsyth County.

During the event, Commission Chairman R.J. (Pete) Amos read the Proclamation and said, "The University of North Georgia will combine the strengths of each institution to enhance higher education and degree completion opportunities for Georgians."
