Downtown Cumming Structures to be Razed this Week

The first structure to go will be the parking deck, built in 1994, located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street.

Demolition is expected to begin this week on several structures in downtown Cumming that are all on the site of the county's future new courthouse and jail.

The first structure to go will be the nearly 20-year-old parking deck, which permanently closed on Dec. 28, located at the intersection of East Main Street and Mason Street. The other structures include a government building that housed several offices of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and a professional building. A small building on the site of the new jail will also be demolished.

The demolition process is scheduled to take approximately 45 days, according to Jodi Gardner, spokesperson for the county.

But don't expect a dramatic implosion to any of the buildings or use of a wrecking ball. Gardner says the buildings will be razed in sections using machinery similar to a backhoe or tractor with front attachments. Industrial Facilities Solutions, LLC will be doing the work.

You can expect to see a lot of activity near the site in downtown Cumming during the demolition work, which is scheduled to occur Monday through Saturday, from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sidewalks near the site will close as needed throughout the course of the project. The county also says no extended road closures are expected to be necessary, but intermittent lane closures on the streets surrounding the parking deck may be needed.

“Forsyth County appreciates the patience of our citizens and others visiting downtown Cumming as the demolition phase of this project begins, and also going forward into the construction of the new courthouse and jail,” said County Manager Doug Derrer.

Anyone conducting business with the courthouse should use the parking lot at the southwest corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road. Parking areas for both the public and for county employees are designated at the County Administration Building. There is also additional weekday parking from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the public and for county employees available at Cumming Baptist Church (spaces marked with a red dot only).

The new courthouse and jail projects were approved by Forsyth County voters in November 2011 as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.
