GA 400 Cable Barrier Installation Underway

Traffic on GA 400 may be slow in some spots in Forsyth, Dawson and Lumpkin counties.

A cable barrier is being installed along GA 400 from the Forsyth-Dawson County line to Chesterra Drive in Lumpkin County, The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced in a news release.

Daytime work continues through today, March 16 with overnight work scheduled to begin Monday, March 19 and continue weeknights as weather permits. Limited lane closures are planned for overnights only and most of the work will occur without impact to drivers.

"The barrels you see out on State Route 400 now are there as crews prepare to begin installing cable barrier in the median," said DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith. "Crews will start by pouring the concrete foundation for the cable."

According to the GDOT, cable barrier has previously been installed on more than 100 miles of Georgia interstates and state routes in which there are open center medians. It repeatedly has prevented cross-over accidents in which vehicles traveling in one direction become out of control, cross the median and strike vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, often head-on collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. The barrier, which utilizes woven, tensioned cables attached to steel posts, also is less expensive to both install and maintain than traditional guardrail.

Massana Construction is handling 5.1 miles of the barrier on GA 400 at a contract price of $665,452. The expected completion date for cable barrier installation along both routes is April 30.
