GDOT Update on S.R. 20 Progress Released

The entire project should be completed by Nov. 30, 2016.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has updated the public on the road widening project on State Route 20 that spans Forsyth and Gwinnett counties.

Two of the three projects are wholly or partly in Forsyth County, including a stretch between Samples Road and S.R. 20's border with Gwinnett County.

According to information released by Forsyth County, the first phase of the project is widening S.R. 20 to a four lane divided highway and adding sidewalks to a 2.75 mile stretch between Samples and James Burgess roads.

C.W. Matthews Contracting of Marietta has been awarded an $18.8 million contract to complete the project, and is currently surveying and clearing the site. Utilites along the site are also being relocated. The projected finish date for this section is Nov. 30, 2016.

The second phase of the widening project spans from James Burgess Road to Burnett Trail in Gwinnett County. This 1.07 mile long project will also construct new bridges across the Chattahoochee River. The new bridges will be south of the current bridge crossing.

C.W. Matthews has a $10.2 million contract to complete this section, which requires a similar four lane divided highway. Utility relocations on this section of the project are almost completed. Crews are also building drainage structures, laying drainage pipes, and creating earthworks. The projected finish date for this section is May 31, 2016.

In Gwinnett County, C.W. Matthews has a $31.8 million contract for widening 3.71 miles of S.R. 20 between Burnett Trail and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Utilities have been relocated along this stretch, and construction on retaining walls, drainage, and earthworks is already underway. The project's projected finished date is June 30, 2016.
