Governor Approves County's District Maps

Gov. Nathan Deal today approved local legislation that provides district boundaries for Forsyth County Commission and Board of Education races.The maps must still be approved by the U.S. Justice Department.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed a laundry list of local legislation Thursday, most of which provides .

But the maps, which were drafted and approved by county officials in August, still have another hurdle to clear before they gain final approval. They must still get a thumbs up from the U.S. Justice Department.

Georgia counties were required to redraw voting districts following the 2010 U.S. Census in order to keep each one approximately equal in the number of voters.

The county is represented by five county commissioners and five school board representatives.

The 2012 election cycle will feature county commission races in Districts 2, 4 and 5 and school board races in Districts 3, 4 and 5.

The most notable difference in the maps this year is that a portion of Cumming has been taken out of District 5. The map approved by the governor Thursday places all of the city in District 1. Also the Windermere community has been placed in more than one district. The biggest section is in District 5 and a smaller portion is in District 3.
