Heavy Rains Flood Sewer Line Near Big Creek

No customers have experienced an interruption in service, Forsyth County officials said.

Along with Wednesday evening's heavy downpour forcing a road to close in south Forsyth County, county officials say the showers also caused one of its sewer lines to flood.

A 48-inch gravity sewer line feeding into the Forsyth County's Fowler Water Reclamation Facility was hit with flooding from last night's heavy rain, said County Spokesperson Jodi Gardner.

The line is located near Big Creek, which was also flooded by the "massive amount of rain," Gardner added.

The county believes that around 6 a.m. Thursday, a manhole outside the facility began to overflow, which resulted in a mix of rainwater and sewage overflowing into the flooded area near the creek.

"There has been no interruption to service to customers due to the overflow that occurred just outside the plant," Gardner stated.

The flow has been stopped and a preliminary review of the situation show the waters may have propelled a heavy object, possibly a tree, to hit and damage the sewer manhole, "allowing massive amounts of flood water to enter the sewer collection system," Gardner said.

As required by state law, the county has notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Forsyth County Health Department and downstream water purveyors.

The county will perform other necessary steps once they determine the extent of the spill.
