A brand-new animal shelter located off Georgia 400 in northern Forsyth County plans to open its doors to the public on Aug. 1, reports Forsyth County News.

The new 13,700 sq. ft. shelter, which will replace the shelter on Old Atlanta Road, will have room for one to two hundred cats and dogs. Transfer of animals currently in county care to the new shelter will begin on July 29.

The hiring process has begun to staff the new facility, Chris Peninger, manager of the Forsyth County Animal Shelter, told Forsyth County News. Currently, there are job openings for one shelter coordinator, one veterinary technician, four kennel technicians, and two administrative technicians.

The committe in charge of the county's animal shelter has tapped Cumming-based Pet Vet Inc. as the new veterinary services provider for the shelter, but that nomination has yet to be approved by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.

Cumming Patch first told you about the decision to build a new animal shelter back in February, 2011. Since then, Patch has covered the groundbreaking of the new facility, and reported the hiring of Peninger, who has over 20 years of experience in the field.
