Sunday Alcohol Sales Heads for a Vote in Forsyth County

BOC's unanimous vote in Tuesday's work session places the issue squarely before the citizens of Forsyth County.

Forsyth County will join a growing number of municipalities in Georgia in letting citizens decide if they want approval of the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday.

The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to place the issue on the March 6 ballot, the same day the state will hold its presidential primary and the same day voters in Cumming and neighboring Dawson and Hall counties will vote "yea" or "nay" on Sunday alcohol sales.

For years, a coalition of churches and Christian organizations have successfully blocked putting the issue to a vote, but, during his first year in office, Republican Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation last spring that enabled communities to hold a referendum.

At the time, Mayor Ford Gravitt said, "There's been a lot of interest in this from stores like Walmart, Target and Ingles and some other grocery and package stores, so we should let the people decide."

Dist. 4 Commissioner Patrick Bell said, "I don't know if I'll vote for it or not, but on the basis of small and limited government, I believe we should give our citizens an opportunity to vote for it."
