Who's Qualified for the 2013 Election in Cumming?

Mayor and two council seats are up for grabs in the Nov. 5 general election.

Cumming Mayor H. Ford Gravitt, 71, may very well lead the city into the next four years, the end of which would mark his 50 years in public office.

The only one thus far to qualify to run for the mayor's seat in the Nov. 5 general election, according to City Clerk and Elections Superintendent Jeff Homea, Gravitt was a city councilman before taking the city's top spot in 1971. He's now in his 42nd year as Cumming mayor.

But Gravitt may have a few more years before he's America's longest-serving mayor. Former Brooklyn, Ohio, Mayor John Coyne held a top seat for 52 years, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Incumbents have been the only to qualify for two Cumming City Council seats up for grabs in November. Current Councilmen Rupert Sexton, 75, who represents Post 1, and Quincy Holton, 77, of Post 2, also have officially signed up as candidates, Homea said.

Qualifying ends Friday at 4:30 p.m.
