Coal Mountain Elementary Students Extend a Hand to Japan

More than $1,700 was raised during a week long fundraiser for the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund.

Students at recently held a week long fundraiser for the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund. At the end of the week students presented a check for $1,787.20 to Andy Thompson of the Northeast Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Some of the activities surrounding the fundraiser included a challenge called "Jugs for Japan" where each homeroom class decorated a milk jug to collect change. Another activity had students making donations to play any instrument they wanted for the school's "Jam for Japan" event.

The school also ordered 750 bracelets that read "Miners Support Japan." Those bracelets were going for $1 each and sold-out quickly.

The school's principal, Debbie Smith, commended two teachers, and students in the 4th and 5th grades, who were instrumental in getting the bracelets sold.
