Football Preview: South Forsyth High School

War Eagles will lean heavily on running back Hunter Beeghley to bolster ground game, improve on a 6-4 season last year and move deeper into the state playoffs.

Cumming Patch kicks off our weekly preview series of Forsyth County high school football. This week we are highlighting the South Forsyth War Eagles.

Second year head coach Jeff Arnette took a good hard look at his South Forsyth players during spring football practice and liked what he saw.

For one thing, the War Eagles are way ahead of where they were this time last year when they were getting acquainted with their new head coach and vice versa.

That's not to say there aren't some question marks. For example, two starters and team leaders who graduated and won't be easy to replace are quarterback Nick Belyew and running back Brett Charron.

Fortunately, South will have one experienced ball carrier back in Hunter Beeghley. When they tee it up later this month, Beeghley could be the go-to guy on offense. But Arnette will be looking for his talented senior to provide more than just his ability to tote the rock. He will be called upon to provide some leadership for the younger players.

Last year's backup quarterback junior Jantzen Jeffrey will line up under center and Athletic Director Keith Gravitt said he had a good spring practice.

Also slated to make a contribution on the offensive side of the ball will be sophomore fullback Brett Larkin and senior halfback Michel Hovenetz.

Junior Eddie Mirynowski, is the War Eagles designated hitter, meaning they can insert him just about anywhere in the lineup and be confident they will get good production. Mirynowski can play quarterback, wide receiver or running back. Defensively, the coaches will be comfortable playing him secondary as well.

South will also have to replace some departing offensive linemen but senior linemen Josh Hill and Ben Miller can provide some bulk and some experience up front.

Shel Morrison and Chris Ford return to the defensive line and should prove to be very effective at halting the opponent's ground game.

South went 6-4 last year before losing in the first round of the state playoffs and Arnette and the War Eagles will be looking to improve on that mark in 2011.
