School Board's Tentative Budget Is Approved

As the school year winds down, a flurry of last-minute details are the top priority for students and teachers alike. Behind the scenes, the Forsyth County School Board has been working hard to calculate and approve a budget to accommodate the 2011-2012 school year.
It was no easy task considering local revenues have dropped 13.6 million from last year. Nonetheless, a $263.3 million dollar budget has been approved thanks in part to careful spending in the past and 6.5 million dollars in leftover grant funds from a federal education jobs funding program.

-1,050 New student notebook computers- Cost $688.00 each/ Total: $722,400
-New service contracts with Simplex Grinell and SE Security for strobe sequencing (for security and fire alarms)-Cost total: $180,334

- Contract with EcoOrchards for new biodegradable lunch trays to replace polystyrene lunch- Cost total: $227,857.50
-Contract with Floor Care Specialists for gym floor resurfacing-Cost total: $17,595
-Contract with Cliff's Fire Extinguisher Company for fire inspection services-Cost total: $68,120
-Renew annual contract with Exterminating Inc-Cost total: $89,975
-Renew annual contract with US Food Service- Cost total: 3,250,000
-Purchase new equipment to upgrade the district's Safari Montage video streaming service to enhance it's current capabilities to accommodate student home-access and mobile device access. The upgrade will increase student achievement and expands their education opportunities.-Cost total: $343,051

In addition to careful scrutiny over the safest and most cost efficient means for providing the county with superior education resources in a superior environment, the Forsyth County Board of Education's 2011-2012 balanced budget leaves the system with system with $40 in reserves despite a one percent increase (due to new hires and health care benefits) over last year's budget.
