The following summary was taken from the Aug. 8 and 15 meetings of the Forsyth County Board of Education, as published in the "August 2013 Board Briefs."

The following items were presented to the board: 

2014-15 Calendar Timeline and Communication Plan: The Board was provided details on the 2014-15 calendar development process. Click here to review the timeline!

2014-19 Local Facilities Plan Update: The Board was provided with an update of the 2014-19 Local Facilities Plan development process. To complete the process, the Board will meet on November 14, 2013 to discuss the recommended Facilities Plan and will approve the 2014-19 Facilities Plan on November 21, 2013. On January 1, 2014, the 2014-19 Facilities Plan will go into effect. Clickhere to view the presentation!

Enrollment Update The Board was given information on this year's student enrollment numbers. So far, the system has 40,491 students enrolled. This represents a 5.2% increase from last year. Click here to view the presentation!

HR Update The Board was presented with 2013-14 staffing information. This year, the system hired 283 new educators (82 new positions - 201 replacement positions). FCS is home to a total of 6,194 full-time and substitute employees, of which 2,760 of these are professionally certified. Click here to view the presentation!     

Policy JBC(4) - Awarding Units and Transferring Credit - Revision: The Board reviewed minor recommended changes to the policy, as the Georgia Department of Education recently updated state requirements. The revision adds definitions, states applicability, gives guidelines for awarding credit for dual enrollment courses, and adds awarding of credit guidelines for demonstrating subject area competency through EOCT testing. Finance Report: As of July, the Board learned the system is at 9.07 percent for the budget year. The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenues for June 2013 were down 4.08 percent from June 2012 collections and down 2.22 percent from last month. A financial statement, investment reports, and bond summaries were also shared, as well as a detailed capital projects analysis.

The following items were approved: 

2014-15 Redistricting Timeline and Communication Plan: The Board approved a 2014-15 redistricting timeline and communication plan. This fall, the intent is to redistrict for the 2014-15 school year to relieve overcrowding and populate existing schools. Click here to review the presentation!

Manufacturing Lab for Global Workforce Initiative Pilot: 
The Board approved funding of a manufacturing lab at South Forsyth HS as part of the Global Workforce Initiative (GWI) pilot for the Georgia Department of Education. In 2012, the Georgia General Assembly passed the GWI to promote job growth from international businesses with existing Georgia operations by building public-private partnerships based upon its published version of defined educational pathways.
