Forsyth County Schools Decides on Closing

System officials are concerned about the frigid temperatures, which could cause problems with school buses and with heating school buildings that have been closed since before Christmas.

Forsyth County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan, 7, 2014, according to a system press release.

Twelve-month employees should report at 9 a.m. or when conditions permit.

All before- and after-school activities and athletics will not be held on Tuesday. This school day will be made up on Monday, March 17, 2014, which is listed on the calendar as inclement weather day No. 1.

"We apologize for any inconveniences that this closing might cause for our families but we are simply not as prepared for these weather conditions as schools in the northern United States may be," the release says. "This decision was made for the safety of our students and staff given that Tuesday’s temperatures will be the lowest for our area in nearly two decades.

"With temperatures near zero and wind chill well below zero we will likely be unable to start a significant number of buses and may experience many route related breakdowns. We could also experience complications with the heating of our schools. Additionally, we have many children that are unprepared with appropriate clothing for below-zero conditions. Having them walk to school, wait at the bus stop or be in schools that might not have heat is a chance that we are not willing to take.

"Thank you for your continued support of Forsyth County Schools. If you venture outside on Tuesday, please wear appropriate attire which includes a heavy coat or layers, a hat and gloves."

It has been said by Noel Coward, that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon-day sun. And some have said that only mad Forsyth county residents could think going out in this chill could be fun.
