Cumming Race Car Driver Heading to the Rolex 24 Daytona

Local race car driver Seth Thomas and his teammates prepare for this weekend's 51st anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

When Cumming resident Seth Thomas and his teammates get behind the wheel of their #22 Porsche Cayman GTR this weekend they'll be doing so for good reason, the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The racing event is the prestigious season-opener to the Rolex Sports Car Series scheduled to start on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Daytona, Fla.

Thomas, 37, is part of the Vancouver-based Bullet Racing team, a long-time competitor in the 24 Hour and noted Porsche racing experts. Thomas' team joins a star-studded driver lineup, which includes more than 70 champions from all kinds of racing from around the world. The drivers will battle the 3.56-mile road course in Daytona Prototypes, GT and GX class cars for a coveted victory in the twice-around-the-clock challenge.

"My teammates in this race are James Clay, Dan Rogers, Darryl O'Young, Karl Thomson and myself," Thomas wrote in an e-mail to Cumming Patch. "We will be driving for 24 Hours straight around the Daytona International Motor Speedway Road Course circuit."

Thomas pointed out that the Cayman is entered in the GX class of the race, which is one for alternative fuel vehicles.  

"We will be battling it out with Mazda 6s and other Caymans," he said.

Born and raised in Georgia, Thomas writes on his website, "I have always been a racing fan since I was a little boy when my dad would take me to Road Atlanta to watch the Camel GT series races. It was then I knew I wanted to become a racecar driver."

Some of Thomas' accomplishments include, tying for championship lead in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, he has two wins, two-second place finishes, seven Top-5s and nine Top-10s. He also competed in first at a previous Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona finishing 15th in GT in the Racing4Research Porsche. He was also awarded the BMW Sport Trophy as one of the top 25 BMW privateer drivers in the world, and shares the title of CTSCC Rookie of the Year with co-driver Bill Heumann.
