Lambert Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Dunwoody

Longhorns drop Wildcats in first game 15-5, lose second game 3-2 on a passed ball.

The Lambert High School baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday night with Dunwoody High School, forcing a third game in the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.

The Wildcats came out swinging in the first inning of the first game, putting up four runs in the top half, but the Longhorns charged back, scoring 8 runs in the bottom half of the inning a lead they'd hold onto.

Dunwoody scored one more run in the top of the fourth, while Lambert added two in the fourth and five more in the sixth, leading to the game being called early on the 10 run rule.

The second game proved to be a pitchers duel, with Dunwoody's Logan Elliot and Lambert's Zack Schlosser tossing great games. Lambert struck first, with a run in the first, but Elliot settled down, putting zeros on the scoreboard for the next five innings.

Meanwhile, Dunwoody didn't record a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Wildcats had chances, but couldn't convert with men on in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh, Lambert's first batter got on with a walk, made it to third on a passed ball and steal and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Dunwoody, down 2-0, scored three runs in the seventh –  taking advantage of a few bad throws by Lambert.

Dunwoody's first run came with one out when the Lambert shortstop made the force out at second, but skipped the ball passed the first baseman and a Wildcat runner scored from third.

The Wildcats then tied it, scoring on a passed ball. They did the same when Dunwoody's Will Hudgins stole third base on a bad toss from catcher to pitcher, and came home on another passed ball.

The Longhorns will play the third game against Dunwoody at Lambert Thursday at 5:55 p.m.
