PGA Volunteers Descend on Atlanta Athletic Club

Thousands of volunteers for the upcoming PGA Championship completed a round of training over the weekend.

Some 3,500 volunteers from five countries and 47 states will be lending a hand at the upcoming PGA Championship taking place at the Atlanta Athletic Club Aug. 8-14.

About a thousand of these volunteers showed up at the club over the weekend to pick up supplies and credentials and to attend training sessions.

"Hydrate" is fourth-time volunteer Christina Duffy's advice to new volunteers. "Water, water, water."

Duffy, who is a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club and lives in the Peachtree Corners area, said she is glad that this year she will be working indoors in the media center rather than outside. In previous years she volunteered as a hole marshal. "Wear comfortable shoes and bring a portable folding chair," she added.

Maggie Patterson of Dunwoody, a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club for 50 years, has volunteered in previous years, as well. This year she'll be accompanied by her husband, Dave, for the first time in one of the information centers. She said her favorite part is driving the golf carts.

Morgan Cody, Championship Manager of Administration who is in charge of volunteers, said the positions filled up about two months ago.

"It's a unique opportunity," she said. "You get to enjoy the event while being a part of it. We could have everything else in place, but without the volunteers the event could not happen."
