Mentor Me Camps Focus on Reading, Writing & Friends

Non-profit organization needs donations and volunteers.

Local students from kindergarten through fifth grade recently participated in  annual summer reading sponsored by Mentor Me North Georgia. This year’s summer camp was funded by United Way and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Forsyth, and books were donated by Literacy Forsyth.

Mentor Me is a local non-profit organization committed to making a difference in the lives of children and young people. The group's camps and after-school programs focus primarily on students whose native language is not English

"The camps provide a summer learning opportunity for children," said Sylvia Cardona, executive director of Mentor Me, in a press release.  "The emphasis is on reading and writing skills, which they might not use during the summer months.  Everyone reads one book during the camp.  Then they receive another book to take home to read before returning to school after the summer break.

"But the kids also have fun at the camps," Cardona continued.  "And they meet new friends, which enhances their social skills.  Another focus of the camps was making new and diverse friends.
