Make Sure you are an Ethical, Fair, and Lawful Manager

A natural reason for wanting to become a business owner is to be your own boss. Then, unless your operation is a one-man shop, it comes time to think about other employees. Once you have made the decision to hire employees, there must be a balance between your prior responsibilities and your leadership responsibilities.  When we think about leadership, we often think about motivation and mentoring.

An article titled, “How to be an Ethical, Fair, and Lawful Manager of Employees (While Protecting Your Interests)” is found on www.SBA.gov .  We believe that this article presents important considerations for business leadership.  The article stresses the importance of treating all employees with fairness and equality. As highlighted in the article, federal law regulates equality in hiring decisions, treatment of employees in the workplace, and pay.  Some of the federal regulations may or may not apply depending on the number of employees within your business. Regardless of the size of your company, however, equality and fairness should be at the forefront of your management practices.

The article also suggests that employers should keep good records, develop employee handbooks, and communicate policy changes.  These suggestions are not only for the benefit of employees, but also provide protection for the employer.  For employer protection, it is also important to understand specific state laws that apply to your company and how they impact your management practices.
