"Times are about the Same"

By: Bascomb Biggers

Well, I flipped the page on the calendar the other day and realized that we not only had a new day, but also a new year.  My how time flies when you get old.  Seems like just the other day that it was 1914.  Now that was a year that had some excitement to it, and Old Bascomb was still young enough to be in the thick of it.

Its always good to look back to see where you come from, and 1914 had a big impact on most of us, that is still havin an effect today.  It all started on a Thursday, which wasn't no big deal except that the first day of 1914 was goin to be the begginin of the year that the whole world went to war.  In June of 1914 somebody killed the Archduke of Austria, and before the year was over, the whole world was fightin each other.

But I'm getting a little ahead of myself, because in April of that year, a little thing called The Tampico Affair saw the US send 2300 troops into that Mexican city and stay there for six months, while they was havin a revolution in Mexico.  In August of 1914 they opened up the "Big Ditch" down in Panama which made it a little easier to go around Mexico all together.

Now, 1914 was a good year for baseball in the good ole USA, cause a ballplayer named Honus Wagner reached 3000 career hits for the first time it was ever done in the game.  1914 also saw a young player make his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox.  His name was Babe Ruth

1914 was also a bad year for the good ole USA, cause that's the year the Federal Reserve Bank first opened their doors, and the beginnin of when the Big Bank, backed by rich folks, first started stealin money from the little folks.  They done such a good job that they helped us into a depression just fifteen years later, and they are still goin after the little man's money today.

Well, folks, by the end of 1914 the whole world was fightin each other all over the globe, while the good ole USA tried to stay out of it, but after a few years, we was in it too.  So here we are a hundred years later, and folks are still fussin with each other all over the world, and we still got problems with Mexico.  The economy ain't much better, what with the Big Bank still letting the rich folks steal the little man's money, while the politicians lie and steal to get re-elected.  Course, baseball is still our national pastime, but the players are now the rich folks, and the little man can't afford to buy a ticket.

It seems that after a hundred years, we might have learned somethin, but I'll let you figure that out for yourselves, right now its time for Old Bascomb to take a nap.

"Now that's the way I see it and you can tell'em I said so."
