Speed Limit Change Coming on SR 20 in Cumming

Planned road improvements on State Route 20 that begin in Cumming and Forsyth County mean that the speed limit there will be reduced soon.

According to a Georgia Department of Transportation announcement, the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph from 45 beginning Monday, Nov. 4. The change will take effect from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Gwinnett County to James Burgess Road in Forsyth County.

“In our active work zones the speed limit is lowered by 10 miles per hour twenty four hours a day, seven days a week throughout the life of the project,” DOT District Construction Engineer Harold Mull said in the release. “It is a safety decision, for the safety of people driving through the area and for workers in the area.

"It is absolutely imperative that drivers slow down in the work zone. There will be dozens of pieces of equipment and people working in or near State Route 20 at all times of the day. We must maintain a slower, consistent pace of traffic.”

Changeable message signs, new speed limit signs with flags attached, and speed reduction warning signs will be in place to warn motorists of the change, the DOT release said. 

The road work is part of a project involving Gwinnett County that was approved and launched earlier this year.

The DOT release also advised that fines are doubled in a work zone for each offense, up to $2,000 per offense.
