My Prayer For The Students of N.F.H.S.

Last night my wife and I drove around North Forsyth High School and I expressed to her my heart and prayer for the student body of the school.

As many in our community I sit at my desk with a heavy heart this morning thinking about the death of Trey Spencer, a freshman at . I did not know Trey personally, but as I read the comments about him from his class mates I can’t help but feel that I do. In some ways we all know him. A freshman full of life, kind, and just a joy to be around. My prayers are with his family and friends. You can read his .

Last night my wife and I drove around N.F.H.S. and I expressed to her my heart and prayer for the student body of the school and every teenager who has been impacted by the life of Trey Spencer. I would like to take a moment and share this with you.

1. I pray that the students take time to stop and reflect on the life of Trey. They should thank God for the time they had with him. They should do this individually and in small groups with their friends to help bring comfort to those that mourn and in remembrance of this young man. We are told in the book of Ecclesiastes that their is wisdom to be found in our mourning and that it is good to meditate on life during these times.

2. I pray that every student will take time to discuss with their parents their thoughts about this tragedy. For many students this will be their closest encounter to death at this point in their life and it is very difficult to process. We do ourselves, our community, and our God a great injustice when we do not show the appropriate respect for life and death. Can I encourage you to not dwell upon all the details of the circumstances of the death but go much deeper and consider the deeper issues.

3. I pray that every student will stop and reflect about the brevity of life. Rather your life ends in high school or if you live into your 70's your life is merely a vapor (James 4:14).

4. I pray that every Christian student will be prepared to first be comforted by the truths of the Bible and be able to share their faith with their classmates. As a believer I have hope to share in this dark hour as does every believer at N.F.H.S. They should take this time to speak with the spiritual mentors and parents about how to share their faith with their friends during this difficult time.

As a young man I experienced my father death of drug overdose at the age of 18. I have experienced the loss of loved ones due to substance abuse on an abnormally high level. It never gets easier but I have found a hope that is “steadfast and sure." I remember what it was like to be a teenager and try to navigate your way through these emotions. It was during these years I learned of the all sufficiency of Christ in my life. The Gospel has answers not only for my eternal state but my current circumstances. I am sincerely praying for the students of N.F.H.S. today. Will you please join me?
