Community Gives Back On One Great Day

Local church brings together volunteers to give back and serve others in the community.

(CFUMC) celebrates their 10th annual “One Great Day of Service” Saturday, March 26.

The annual event is an opportunity for volunteers from Forsyth County to give back to those in need in the community. The volunteers will service at least 15 agencies in a variety of projects from painting, cleaning and building to sewing, hugging and sharing.

The day begins with check in and fellowship at the church’s Family Life Center from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., followed by Holy Communion at 8:30 a.m. Then volunteers will head out into the community to serve others.

The “One Great Day of Service” will also include the church’s annual community-wide food drive. The 4th annual event supplies the food pantry at CFUMC and other agencies in the county.

“It’s our largest one all year,” said Stacey Gravitt, Food Pantry Coordinator. “We will collect approximately 15,000 cans or boxes of food in that one day.”

With that much food expected to be donated to the church, at least 1,000 hungry people in the community will be fed according to Gravitt. Each bag contains 20 items of food.

Last year’s drive delivered “truckloads” of food, more than 10,000 units, enough to keep the church’s food pantry stocked for several weeks.

Gravitt said the food comes from donations and purchases at the Atlanta Community Food Bank through money that is donated to CFUMC.

“It’s all totally self-supporting through independent donations from businesses, individuals and members of our church,” she said.

The CFUMC Food Pantry is again participating in the Feinstein $1 Million Challenge.

Every year philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein donates $1 million to various food pantries across the U.S. His foundation divides the money based on donations of funds, food and pledges received during March and April.

“The more that we get donated in those two months, the larger piece of the one million we get,” she added.
