Cumming Celebrates Winning Smiles and Happy Hearts

Athletes compete in the annual Forsyth County Special Olympics at Forsyth Central High School.

Last Friday, April 20, Special Olympics Forsyth County (SOFC) held its annual Spring Games at 

Led by Coordinator Susan Darlington of SOFC, athletes from all over Forsyth County spent the day competing in numerous Track and Field events in varying levels of difficulty. This day of local competition is the precursor to the Annual Summer Games held in Atlanta in early summer.

With more than 300 athletes competing, the Games were an overwhelming success. Nearly 350 high school “buddies” guided and assisted the athletes if needed, and more than 100 community volunteers helped this well oiled machine churn out smiles and cheers.

This year’s queen, Jacquelyn LaTour, accompanied by her court, led the opening ceremonies parade. The Games kicked off with an opening relay race, followed by numerous races, ball challenges, gym sports and other events.

As the events winded down, lunch for all athletes and buddies was provided by  and the , sponsored by Lexus-Nexus.
