Give Blood, Save Lives

Local church on a 'mission' to help American Red Cross.

(CFUMC) will host a blood drive for the America Red Cross on Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

According to Nita Chambless, Lay volunteer, the Red Cross holds for drives there per year because “Cumming First is a giving church. This is a mission we’ve done for I don’t know how many years.”

The Red Cross supplies virtually everything posters, refreshments, and even the pens used in registration. Chambless shared the story of one drive when a peanut butter scare meant that Nutter Butter cookies were not available. As a result, “we almost had a mutiny,” she shared.

Volunteers, space and utilities are provided by the church. Chambless added that she’s never been at a loss for volunteers. The drive in March, which coincides with the church’s Great Day of Service, is when there are the largest number of volunteers and donors.

Walk-in are welcome and appointments for donations can be made by emailing Chambless at nchambless@att.net.

Donors can donate every 56 days and walk-ins are welcome. All types are needed, especially O- (O-negative) which is the universal donor, meaning anyone can receive it.

“I encourage anybody to give. Don’t let not having an appointment stop you,” said Chambless.

In addition to the usual cookies and juice refreshments for post-donation consumption, water has been added to the offerings.  Chambless said that folks who donate on Monday will also be given a coupon for a free gift from Edible Arrangements in Cumming.

The CFUMC is located at 770 Canton Highway in Cumming and the blood drive will be held in room 16.

Signage on Canton Highway as well as within the building will direct people who are unfamiliar with the location.
