Local Restaurant 'Sticks It 2 Cancer'

Rice Restaurant & Sushi Bar is donating 20 percent of today's proceeds to the local chapter of Stick It 2 Cancer.

The third annual 'Rice for Remission' dine to donate event is underway through 9:30 tonight at off Keith Bridge Road in Cumming.

The restaurant will donate 20 percent of today's proceeds to the local chapter of Stick It 2 Cancer. The charity, headed by John and Torri Westmoreland, owners of In-Depth Wraps, raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Last year Rice donated about $1500 to the charity, in 2010 it was close to $1100. A positive sign the annual food event is catching on in the community.

"They typically have their biggest Tuesday night of the year when we do this," said John. "We know a lot of people that like that restaurant because it's great. Lily [owner] has been really great with us, she's always offering to help out."

All you have to do is show up and order some food, including take out orders. If you are not a fan of sushi, Rice also serves up Chinese and Japanese food. All items on their regular menu will go towards the 'Rice for Remission' event.

The money raised goes towards the goal of $104,000 and that money will be used to fund a researcher.

"It costs about a $1,000 to fund a researcher for a week, so that's two years of funding a researcher."

The charity is comprised of about eight sub-teams based on businesses around the area, according to Westmoreland.

"Every one of them has their own sub-teams as part of Stick It 2 Cancer, we call friends and family teams," he said. "They all drive their own little effort and they all have their own events, and we just help them promote them."

Westmoreland said in addition to this fundraiser, they are gearing up for several more this year, includingon September 22 at the Cumming Fairgrounds.

"Last year we were expecting about 2,000 walkers, we ended up with about 3500 walkers that night," he said.

The event also raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
