Warrants Filed in Crash that Killed Cumming Man

A suspect is expected to turn herself in on Wednesday to face charges in the fatal traffic accident on April 11.

Arrest warrants have been obtained by a woman in connection with a fatal traffic accident on April 11 in nearby Alpharetta. George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety, said charges have been made against the driver of the vehicle that investigators say initiated the traffic crash. Now that the investigation of the crash is complete, Haleigh Davis Fine has been charged with: She is represented by an attorney and is expected to turn herself in to police at 5 p.m. on May 16. Sheriff's Office Names Employee of the Quarter

Deputy First Class Clint Thaxton is recognized due to his help in nabbing a suspect wanted for statutory rape.

Deputy First Class Clint Thaxton has been selected as the Headquarters Bureau Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2012, according to Lt. Col. D.T. Smith of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. He is recognized for being instrumental in working with the U.S. Marshals Service Taskforce in extraditing a suspect, wanted for statutory rape, back to Forsyth County. In April 2010, a warrant was issued for Victor Rojo, now 20 years old, for the rape of a 14-year-old girl. In October of that year, the same teenage girl disappeared from her home. Rojo was again a suspect. A month later, in November, the young girl returned home and was charged as a runaway. During this time period, on a couple of occasions, information was obtained …

Forsyth Firefighters Prepare for Annual Fundraiser

The annual 'Give Burns the Boot' kicks off this weekend in Forsyth County and across Georgia.

More than 100 fire departments across Georgia are preparing for the annual boot drive called "Give Burns the Boot" benefiting the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. Beginning this Saturday, May 5 and the following two Saturdays, May 12 and 19, motorists can expect to see local firefighters at intersections throughout the county collecting donations. “We are very appreciative of the support the boot drive receives here in Forsyth County,” said Fire Chief Danny Bowman in a news release. “Year after year, our citizens demonstrate their compassion for Georgia’s burn victims through their generous donations.” The collected funds, presented to the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, will be utilized for fire safety and prevention education…

Authorities Rescue Two From Buford Dam

Incident happened late Saturday.

Gwinnett Fire Swift Water Rescue rescued two people and one dog stranded on an island in the Chattahoochee River near Buford Dam late Saturday, according to a media release. Gwinnett Fire Lt. Eric Eberly said Sunday that the individuals reported in a 911 call that their boat was quickly taking on water and was about to sink when they made it to the island. Within a short period of time, swift water crews found the party of three in no distress, Eberly said. No injuries were reported. Names were not released. Don’t miss any Cumming news. Cumming Man Charged with Sex Crimes

A 31-year-old man is charged with 11 sex crimes involving at least four boys he falsely met on Facebook.

A Cumming man faces 11 sex crimes for allegedly posing as a teenage girl on Facebook to elicit sexual images from middle-school age boys, according to authorities. Forsyth County Sheriff's Office investigators arrested 31-year-old Brendan J. Spaar Tuesday night and charged him with four counts of child molestation, four counts of sexual exploitation of children and three counts of computer pornography. According to Investigator J.D. Roe of the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the Criminal Investigations Division, Spaar had created a fictitious page on Facebook, posing as a 16-year-old girl from South Forsyth High School with the name of Kinsey Spencer. “This girl does not exist,” said Roe in a news release. “We have checked with …

Thieves Identified Thanks to Social Media

Suspected credit card thieves were captured on camera and their photos posted on the Internet.

Two Forsyth County women suspected of stealing a credit card turned themselves in earlier this week after discovering their photos were posted on Facebook and they were wanted for the theft, according to authorities.            Khrista M. Simonds, 21, and Elaine F. Dishroom, 47, are accused of stealing a credit card on April 1 and making several fraudulent transactions at Kroger and CVS Pharmacy on Canton Highway the same day. “Investigator Frank Karic obtained a video from CVS of the two female suspects who used the victim’s credit card, Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton said. Cumming Resident Identified as Man Killed on I-75

On Tuesday, authorities identified the body of a man struck by several vehicles over the weekend.

A stop early Saturday morning to check an abandoned car on Interstate 75 led to the discovery of a body that had been struck by several vehicles, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said. Authorities on Tuesday identified the deceased man as Shannon Larry Chumbler, 37, of Cumming. On Saturday, April 21, around 1:35 a.m., a deputy with the Bartow County Sheriff's Office pulled to the side of I-75 northbound near Glade Road in Acworth and saw Chumbler's body in a travel lane. Authorities say oncoming traffic had hit the man multiple times, but it also appears he was in a travel lane on initial impact. Local Gas Station Damaged by Fire

An early morning fire Monday does significant damage to the Shell gas station on Dahlonega Street in Cumming.

Firefighters were called to an early morning fire Monday at the Shell gas station located at the intersection of Dahlonega Street and Sawnee Drive, across from the public library, in Cumming. Capt. Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department said fire and smoke damaged about 20 percent of the building enough to close the business, for now, temporarily. It is not known how the fire was started and there is no damage estimate at this time. Shivers did say the fire is believed to be accidental and that an investigation is underway.

Cumming Couple Involved in Deadly Boating Accident

A couple from Cumming were involved in an apparent two-boat collision that killed a man and seriously injured a woman over the weekend.

A 59-year-old man killed in a boating accident on Lake Lanier over the weekend, has been identified as Stephen Blake Jones, 59, of Duluth, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Jones and a woman, who was seriously injured in the accident, were in a 32-foot pontoon boat reportedly struck by a ski boat sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight Saturday, said Major Stephen Adams of the Georgia DNR. The couple in the 21-foot ski boat are identified as Steven Parker, 32, and Ashley LeBlanc, 30, both of Cumming, according to Adams. Update, April 23, News outlet WDEF.com in Missouri is reporting that Davis Hodge was found in Mississippi. The report states that a search for the teen had been under way in wooded areas of Marion and Grundy counties in Missouri. "We're way past the point of the milk carton these days," says Shellee Hale, a nationally known victims advocate, when discussing the impact that social media played in the case of missing nearby Johns Creek teen Davis Hodge. The 16-year-old student from Johns Creek High School student was found safe and OK Sunday evening, apparently at a location five hours from Atlanta, after being last seen Thursday morning.
