Below is a message from Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Buster Evans on school safety.

  FCS Parents and Staff, I want to thank each of you for your renewed commitment to promoting safety for our students in Forsyth County Schools. I know that you, like me, are hurting at the senseless act of violence that tragically took the lives of Newtown students and staff. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the members of that community. While there is no indication that this is anything but an isolated incident in a state far from Georgia, we do want to take this opportunity to remind our families that all schools have detailed safety plans in place. Our staff conducts regular drills, including those for a building lockdown, and we have a check-in and screening check-in process for all visitors to the campus. We also have …

Forsyth Holds Successful "Kids Shop with Cops"

Cumming Patch was at the event and caught up with several kids and the cops that shopped with them.

It was another successful kids shop with cops event Wednesday evening at the Cumming Walmart on Market Place Boulevard. The annual "FOP Cops and Kids©" event, hosted by the Sgt. D.P. Land Memorial Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 82, helped out 103 children in need living in Forsyth County. "Within those 103, we had a couple of families from the Abba House, but the majority of those families were people from the community that the [Forsyth County] school social workers pointed out to us," said Det. Matt Starr of the FCSO and State Trustee with the local FOP. "We're actually helping families that were in need that weren't receiving any other assistance," he said. Forsyth Kids Shop with Cops Wednesday

The annual "FOP Cops and Kids©" event, that helps needy kids in the community, takes place on Wednesday evening at Walmart in Cumming.

It's that time of the year again when local deputies and police officers get together on one night to brighten the holiday season for many needy children in Forsyth County. The annual "FOP Cops and Kids©" event, hosted by the Sgt. D.P. Land Memorial Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 82, is Wednesday, Dec. 12. The shopping excursion begins at 6 p.m. at Walmart located at 1500 Market Place Boulevard in Cumming. Last year 59 needy children participated in the program. This year the lodge is helping more than 100 children between the ages of 3 and 14, according to Det. Matt Starr of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and a State Trustee with the local FOP. Teen Arrested After Injuring Stepfather at Church

A 17-year-old has been arrested for injuring his stepfather on the neck with a knife at a church in Cumming.

Update: 10-30-12, 10:23 a.m. (additional information) Update: 10-29-12, 4:36 p.m. (bond set) A teenager is sitting in jail after allegedly injuring his stepfather with a folding pocket knife at church Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Christian Alexander Guerndt, 17, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault. The incident happened in between services at Mercy Fellowship Church located at the intersection of Tolbert and Dogwood Streets in Cumming around 4:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi with Cumming Police. "They got into a verbal argument inside," Zimbardi said. The two eventually made their way outside of the church where the argument continued. Two More Arrested in Cumming Home Invasion

A third suspect was arrested last week and remains in custody at the Forsyth County Detention Center.

Two more suspects wanted in a Cumming home invasion last week have been arrested, authorities said. Yusef Davis, 26, was arrested by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office on warrants issued by Cumming Police who also arrested Robert Nash, 21. Both men, who are from Cumming, were picked up earlier today [Monday]. A third suspect, Shaeem McLaren, 20, also of Cumming, was arrested last week. All three have been charged with armed robbery, theft by taking, and burglary in the first degree, according to Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi with Cumming P.D. They are being held at the Forsyth County Detention Center. UPDATE: One Suspect Arrested in Cumming Home Invasion

One suspect is in custody in connection with Tuesday's home invasion in Cumming.

Update: 10-12-12, 3:10 p.m. (more on the suspect arrested below) Update: 10-11-12, 5:26 p.m. One of the suspects involved in a home invasion earlier this week was apprehended in Forsyth County by authorities, according to Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi of the Cumming Police Department. "We have arrested one person," said Zimbardi. Shaeem McLaren, 20, of Cumming was arrested and charged with armed robbery, theft by taking, and burglary in the first degree, according to Karleen Chalker of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Have You Seen This Man?

Cumming authorities are looking for a man suspected of shoplifting a television from the local Target Superstore.

The Cumming Police Department has issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for a man suspected of shoplifting a television from a local store. The alleged theft occurred on Aug. 10 at the Target Superstore located at 1525 Market Place Boulevard in Cumming. According to authorities, the man (pictured) was approached by a loss prevention officer at which time the suspect "produced a small revolver, black in color, and demanded to be released." The supsect then fled the scene on foot and was picked up by a white 4-door passenger car driven by a woman (also pictured).  If anyone knows the identity of either suspect, contact Detective J. Carmike Bomb Threat Suspect ID'd

The FBI believes the man "is no longer a threat," the movie chain's spokesman said.

The man behind a bomb threat that put Carmike locations in Cumming and other parts of metro Atlanta on alert last Friday has been identified, the spokesman for the Columbus movie chain said in a one-sentence statement. "The FBI has identified the person responsible for the bomb threats that occurred last Friday, August 17, 2012 involving Carmike Cinemas and believes he is no longer a threat," Carmike spokesman Terrell Mayton said Thursday. The statement did not mention if the suspect had been arrested.
