The Forsyth County government has closed several roads in the wake of flooding from weekend rains.
Flooding has forced Forsyth County to close several roads in its jurisdiction. Sanders Road between Mary Alice Park Road and Timberlake Trail, Parks Road and Nicholson Road and Old Federal Road at the Etowah River have all been closed off by the government. Big Creek Greenway is also closed to the public. The closures come on the heels of the National Weather Service issuing a flood warning for Cumming Sunday evening. Big Creek near Cumming was reportedly at 4.26 feet at 4:45 a.m. and falling slowly. The creek's waters reached 8.24 feet at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19, before starting to fall. Big Creek near the city is causing minor flooding in the area.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a dense fog advisory which is in effect until 10 a.m. Visibility will be reduced to a quarter of a mile or less at times through the morning commute. "Sudden reductions in visibility will make for hazardous travel conditions this morning," the National Weather Service advisory said. The local forecast said to expect widespread dense fog before 11 a.m. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and use your headlights while leaving plenty of distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Cumming residents will have to dodge showers and tangle with a brief cold blast mid-week.
Keep your umbrellas close at hand Cumming - at least for now. Rain continues through Monday night with sunshine returning Tuesday. A 100 percent chance of rain through Monday night with the possibility of a thunderstorm, according to the National Weather Service. Low temperatures will dip into the low 40's. Showers and thunderstorms will end by early Tuesday morning, then decreasing clouds and plenty of sunshine with a high reaching 59 degrees. After a chilly weekend, Cumming and Forsyth County will soon see rain and warmer temperatures.
Cumming and Forsyth County residents will soon see rain — and mild temperatures — return this week. After a cold weekend, a chance of rain will linger tonight and into Tuesday night. However, sunny skies will return on Wednesday and a warm-up will move into the city on Friday, and will remain in the area through Sunday. While the precipitation for our area will be rain, there's a slight chance that rain could turn into snow showers across portions of extreme north Georgia Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. Portions of north and central Georgia could see some snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop headed into the weekend. Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a freeze warning that includes Cumming and Forsyth County. A cold front is expected to push across north and central Georgia this week, ushering in warmer weather and maybe some severe thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. "Instability and wind shear values appear sufficient to support the development of scattered to numerous thunderstorms on Wednesday, especially during the afternoon and evening," meteorologists say in a hazardous weather statement, which applies to Cumming and Forsyth County. UPDATE: 1-24-13, 5 p.m. A winter storm warning for freezing rain is in effect for Forsyth and nearby counties through 6 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. This includes portions of North Georgia, generally north and east of a line from Ellijay to Cumming to Gainesville. Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet is expected with accumulations of up to 1/4 inch of ice, especially on trees and power lines. Little to no sleet accumulation. Snow is expected across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service's winter weather advisory.
