Flooding Closes Forsyth County Roads

The Forsyth County government has closed several roads in the wake of flooding from weekend rains.

Flooding has forced Forsyth County to close several roads in its jurisdiction. Sanders Road between Mary Alice Park Road and Timberlake Trail, Parks Road and Nicholson Road and Old Federal Road at the Etowah River have all been closed off by the government. Big Creek Greenway is also closed to the public. The closures come on the heels of the National Weather Service issuing a flood warning for Cumming Sunday evening.  Big Creek near Cumming was reportedly at 4.26 feet at 4:45 a.m. and falling slowly. Dense Fog Advisory for North Georgia Roads

Big Creek near the city is causing minor flooding in the area.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a dense fog advisory which is in effect until 10 a.m. Visibility will be reduced to a quarter of a mile or less at times through the morning commute. "Sudden reductions in visibility will make for hazardous travel conditions this morning," the National Weather Service advisory said. The local forecast said to expect widespread dense fog before 11 a.m. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and use your headlights while leaving plenty of distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Rain, Cool Temperatures In Store This Week for Cumming

Cumming residents will have to dodge showers and tangle with a brief cold blast mid-week.

Keep your umbrellas close at hand Cumming - at least for now. Rain continues through Monday night with sunshine returning Tuesday. A 100 percent chance of rain through Monday night with the possibility of a thunderstorm, according to the National Weather Service. Low temperatures will dip into the low 40's. Showers and thunderstorms will end by early Tuesday morning, then decreasing clouds and plenty of sunshine with a high reaching 59 degrees. Tuesday night will be mostly clear with the low temperatures in the mid 30's. Both Wednesday and Thursday will be sunny, with highs in the mid to upper 50's and lows in the 30's. Rain, Warmer Temperatures In Store This Week for Cumming

After a chilly weekend, Cumming and Forsyth County will soon see rain and warmer temperatures.

Cumming and Forsyth County residents will soon see rain — and mild temperatures — return this week. After a cold weekend, a chance of rain will linger tonight and into Tuesday night. However, sunny skies will return on Wednesday and a warm-up will move into the city on Friday, and will remain in the area through Sunday. While the precipitation for our area will be rain, there's a slight chance that rain could turn into snow showers across portions of extreme north Georgia Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.  In Cumming, temperatures today will reach the mid 50s and will drop to around 42 tonight. Tonight will also bring with it a 30 percent chance of rain in the area. Chance of Snow, Wintry Mix Through Weekend for Cumming, Forsyth

Portions of north and central Georgia may see flurries, sleet or snow this weekend and freezing temps through Sunday night.

Portions of north and central Georgia could see some snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop headed into the weekend. Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a freeze warning that includes Cumming and Forsyth County. It's effective through 9 a.m. Friday. "A fast-moving but potent upper low sweeping across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians [on] Saturday will bring a chance for at least light wintry precipitation to north Georgia," according to NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook. Two More Rounds of Heavy Rain for Cumming, Forsyth County

Two to 8 inches of rain have already fallen on parts of north and central Georgia, prompting concerns of flash flooding, extensive street flooding and isolated significant flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

Most of Georgia, including Cumming, is in for a deluge as two rounds of heavy rain likely will start Thursday night and continue through Tuesday, so get your rain boots and umbrellas ready. Two to 4 inches and 4 to 8 inches of rain have already fallen on north and central Georgia, respectively, since the beginning of February, prompting concerns of flash flooding, extensive street flooding and isolated significant flooding, according to the National Weather Service's Hydrologic Outlook, which covers Forsyth and a slew of other counties in north and central Georgia. Warmer Temperatures and Storms Expected in Cumming this Week

Shower and thunderstorms by Wednesday, some of which could produce gusty winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning.

A cold front is expected to push across north and central Georgia this week, ushering in warmer weather and maybe some severe thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. "Instability and wind shear values appear sufficient to support the development of scattered to numerous thunderstorms on Wednesday, especially during the afternoon and evening," meteorologists say in a hazardous weather statement, which applies to Cumming and Forsyth County. "Strong upper level support suggest a few storms could be severe" across north and central Georgia. UPDATE: Chance of Freezing Rain on Friday for Cumming and Forsyth

The National Weather Service calls for a chance of rain or freezing rain before 3 p.m. Friday.

UPDATE: 1-24-13, 5 p.m. A winter storm warning for freezing rain is in effect for Forsyth and nearby counties through 6 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. This includes portions of North Georgia, generally north and east of a line from Ellijay to Cumming to Gainesville. Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet is expected with accumulations of up to 1/4 inch of ice, especially on trees and power lines. Little to no sleet accumulation. Most of the precipitation will fall during the day on Friday, NWS says. Snow Day? Winter Weather Rolls in Today, Tonight

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for north Georgia, which warns of light snow and black ice from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Snow is expected across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service's winter weather advisory. A "cold polar air mass" is expected to spread into north Georgia as widespread rain shifts south. The result: Rain will mix with and change over to snow across portions of north Georgia, including Cartersville and Bartow County. The heaviest snowfall would be in the northeast Georgia Mountains. The winter weather advisory, which lapses Friday morning at 7, warns of light snow and black ice north of a Carrollton-to-Atlanta-to-Jefferson line and south of a Rome-to-Hiawassee line. Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday

Cumming could get its first glimpse this winter of the white stuff as rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

Cumming and Forsyth County could get the first snow of the winter and 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued today. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Forsyth and other counties from Dade to Toombs.
